Overview
The Unicel 6CH-49 is a pleated polyester spa cartridge filter element providing 50.0 sq ft of effective filtration area in a threaded-base configuration engineered for top-load spa filter housings. Dimensional specifications: 8-1/4 inch OD, 6.0-inch length, with a 1-1/2 inch MPT (male pipe thread) bottom connection and a closed-top handle end cap; ABS injection-molded end caps are bonded to a high-pleat-count Reemay nonwoven polyester media pack on a perforated polypropylene core. Nominal filtration efficiency is 20 microns under standard test conditions. The element is rated for continuous service to 115°F with intermittent excursions to 120°F, supporting typical spa circulation pump operating ranges of 5–15 PSI. The 1-1/2 inch MPT base is machined to NPT thread tolerance for direct standpipe engagement without supplemental adapters.
Service interval recommendation: rinse with fresh water every 2–4 weeks; chemical soak in dilute TSP solution or commercial enzyme cleaner every 4–6 weeks to remove accumulated body oils, lotions, and surfactant residue characteristic of spa applications. Replacement is recommended at 12–15 month intervals under typical residential spa use, or at ΔP ≥ 5 PSI above clean operating baseline, whichever occurs first. Installation: hand-tighten the 1-1/2 inch MPT base into the housing standpipe — do not use pipe wrench or apply mechanical torque, as overtightening will deform the ABS thread and compromise the seal. Chemical compatibility: polyester media and ABS end caps tolerate continuous service at ≤ 10 ppm free available chlorine or ≤ 30 ppm total bromine; muriatic acid wash at 1:20 dilution compatible for calcium scale remediation (20-minute maximum exposure, thorough rinse required). Standard Unicel 90-day manufacturer’s defect warranty applies through authorized distribution.
